Cool Anybody know what this is?

When I got home today, my tank had a film of algae on the front (which I magfloat off of course) but for the first time, there was this COOL PERFECT design of zigzags all up and down the glass in a constant line. Does anyone know what that is? I didn't bother with pics, didn't think it'd show.? ~Sheni

Probably the the line the snails left after eating the algae. They eat in that zig zag pattern.

My turbo snail leaves a fan-shaped pattern where he eats algae, its pretty cool looking if you see it at the right angle of light.

Hey whiteshark, to go along with your "Interest" section . . . I read a "Math Teaser" kind of thing that said according to probability that if you dump a glass of wine into the ocean (let it mix thoroughly) and then fill up a glass of ocean water that theres 100% there is at least one molecule of wine in the glass (since there are more molecules in a glass than there are glasses in the ocean).

I'd have to agree about the eating. Astreas and turbos leave zigzags everywhere they go.

Huh, that's funny. I thought about that but I have had my Turbos, Ceriths, and Nassarius for a long time and never seen anything like that. The Turbos make big circles, but these are SKINNY zig zag lines that went all over the glass in lines, but every direction. I DID just add Bumble Snails in the tank last night (just a few). Maybe they did last night.? Thanks~ Sheni

look like these?

thanks to Melev for the pic

these are cerith eggs. while most the time the zig-zag shape will be in a straight line, not a circle like the ones pictured. chances of servival are slim to none.

Okay, WOW! That really could be it!? They were in lines going in all different directions, but yeah... same idea. Although, it looked like it was wiped off in that design, not white with texture. Either way, something to do with snails. I do have Ceriths as of a few weeks ago. Thanks for the pic and help~ Sheni

thats probably them. it seems sometimes ceriths need some practice to get the lines straight or in a neat patern LOL. my first few batches were all over the place, now they are always in a straight zig-zag line, or in a circle like piced above.

Thanks for helping me identify. They must have practiced then. I feel bad cleaning the glass, but they wouldn't make it anyways, right.?

chances are they would not have, but they are good food for the fish and corals. they may have hatched, but the larvie are short lived in our tanks.

Oh, I didn't think of that. I just love a CLEAN front window and they can do all their things on the sides and back, ha. Maybe I'll leave em for a bit next time, pretty NEAT designs.

If this is the case you are not seeing eggs but rather the cleaned glass left behind after a snail has had it's way with the algae film.
