DSB's: Facts and bogus...

While i have done plenty of research on marine subjects, my introduction to RC has brought to my attention many new ideas about the use and functions of the Deep Sand Bed.

What is the general concensus on these following questions?:

1) What is the most appropriate depth proven to work over time (past OTS stages, etc,) for DSB's?

I have heard 5-6"...

2) Which material (sand composition, grain size, ratio of prefered sand types)

3) What factors can best improve the correct (natural) function of a DSB in the home aquarium?

4) What are the personal experiences here with "remote DSB's"?

5) Would a combination of both in tank DSB and a remote DSB be more, less, or equally efficient than one or the other?

6) What are some of the infrequent occurances that have been known to happen in all DSB types (in tank, and remote)?

7) Is there a formula that allows people to figure out the most appropriate changes to all aspects of DSB's mentioned above?

8) Is there anything besides this which is considered by any individual member to be vitally important to the healthy maintanance of the DSB?

Thank you all for your help,
Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

That's a decent sized list there. You might want to head over to Dr. Ron's forum on here since he's the end-all-be-all guru on DSB's on here. You'll probably get most of your info right from his forum.

Unless we've time warped somewhere, I think Dr. Ron's forum has not been on here for quite some time.

While I don't have specific answers to your questions, I can at least hook you up with a mega-thread that has been going for about a year and a half now on remote DSB's. Happy reading

All answers are based upon personal experience and the writer will not be held accountable for the users results.

1. 4-6" depth on average.
2. 0.5-1.5mm grain size. Caribsea products are good.
3. Having a Cleanup crew.
4. Don't use one. But they work just the same.
5. One or the other would be ok.
6. The development of sulphur dioxide pockets (too deep).
7. Not really.
8. Water changes, RO/DI water, cleanup crew and you're good to go.
