filtering 55 reef tank
my 55 gallon reef tank has been running for about 6 years now and I was using an emporer filter (started out as a fish only tank until I got hooked on live rock and corals) but for about the last year or so whenever I checked the filters they would be clean exept for some tiny critters. So I took off the filter and added another power head for circulation. Total of 2 power heads & one protien skimmer. It's been a couple of weeks now with no ill effects, hope this was not a mistake hate to lose everything I worked for. Ther is about 45 maybe 50 lbs. of live rock in the tank. I've been told this can be done if you have enough live rock in the tank. any suggestions/comments would really be helpfull. Thanks in advance. Jeff

You should be fine. I would just aim for 20x or more for tank circulation. The powerfilter is really just a place to put some carbon if you don't have a sump and for a little extra circulation. Live rock/sand, adequate powerheads, and a skimmer are all you really need filtration-wise. Let us know how it goes.
