harvesting caulerpa

What is the best way to harvest caulerpa to sustain the best Nitrate/Phosphate filter my sump currently has an area of 48"x24"x12" that is full of the stuff, once a month i simply cut out a 3rd of this and give it to my LFS is this a good way to do it or is there a better way?
