I hate Hermit Crabs!!

I've got extra shells, various sizes.....yet when I added cerith snails yesterday the hermits pretty much killed all of them!!!

Are hermits needed??

No, they are not. I am completely crab-less because of the snail murdering ways of my former blue legs. I do fine now with a mix of astrea, cerith, nassarius, and a couple of fighting conchs.

I just found out the same thing today with my hermits!!! I thought there were less snails around, and found a half dozen empty shells in one corner of the tank; mostly small snails.

My Hermits kill each other more than my snails but yes they are a pain and no you don't really need them if you replace them with suitable snails.

I purchased a clean-up crew a while back and you would think that I ordered only hermits and empty snail shells. They ate almost all of them..

In my previous tank I had hermits, and they were constantly killing snails and eachother. This time around I am crabless and happy

I strongly suggest if you have snails as part of your cleanup crew, to not use hermits. Hermits eat snails.

I have both hermit crabs and snails. I haven't had a problem with the hermit crabs killing snails or each other. Though I do feed meaty foods to the tank (frozen cube foods, as well as the Borneman "mash" coral food), and the hermit crabs always go completely ape as soon as the scent hits the water.

So, it may be a matter of keeping the hermit crabs happily fed to keep them from attacking each other. . .
