Canister Filter for a Closed Loop?

I have an old Magnum 350, I was considering adding to my tank as a closed loop. I would just run it empty. Is anybody using one for a closed loop? Would there be a downside to using this?

Down side.... Low flow.

I would generally use something with a larger diameter plumbing.

I was thinking of using it instead of a powerhead. I already have a Mag 7 on 1 closed loop and was going to use it as a 2nd one. Would a MaxiJet 900 with the rotating adapter have better flow? That's what it would be replacing.

Rotating adapter??? If you mean one of the powerheads that sweep back and forth, save your money. They always stop working and usually it's pointing directly at your best coral when it happens.
On your size tank I'd do a single CL on a Sequence dart. Possibly integrating a oceans motions 4 way into the mix.
A cheaper alternative would be a Mag 12 return with a SCWD. This would cost you under $150.00

It sounds like you're trying to go cheap. From Personal experience, going cheap always ends up costing more money than doing it well the first time.

No I'm not talking about the Powersweep. I am talking about this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...pc=1&N=0&Nty=1

I have a throttled back Mag 18 as my return pump. And a Mag 7 as my closed loop. I recently change the overflow box and it's running a little close to the top, so I throttled back the Mag 18 a little more. I was hoping to add a little more flow threw the loops.

Over the weekend I got a MaxiJet with the above rotating deflector, which seams OK. Not a ton of flow. I was just thinking that maybe I should have used the Magnum 350 Canister filter I have in my basement and if it would work better. I belive I can still return the Maxijet and deflector ($45), but only for store credit.

Not trying to go too cheap, but also don't need to go crazy.

I understand. You could use the cannister if you wanted, but it seems like a temporary solution to me. I like to use devices with as few moving parts as possible to get a job done. I design my systems under the guise that "the more complex the system, the more likely it is to fail."
I was thinking that if empty, the cannister filter screens would be a nice way to prevent hard objects (snails etc) from entering the driving pump.
Good luck with it however you decide to do it.

the hydor flows really cut the flow down hard. I have 2 maxi 1200's with flow deflectors in my 26 and they are barely enough. I am going back to my wave maker.

So maybe I should just remove the hydor deflector and add the deflector that came with the maxijet? Leave it pointing in 1 direction.

Sure. I would move the direction slightly every week or so to break up the flow and blow out detritus.
