That's ich. Set up a qt. Swipe a sponge through the dirty bottom of your sump and use it for your qt filter, or go down to the lfs, tell them your problem, and ask them to dirty up a sponge for you. The fish risks more from the ich than from newish water. Pimple does describe what you're seeing. Those swellings contain reproduced ich larvae, and they have also infested your tank's sand. Leave your tank fishless for 8 weeks to get rid of it.

or, set up a ten gallon with new-ish salt water, plastic plants, substrate (nothing fancy)
and be ready to change 30-70% of the water until some sort of bacteria comes into the tank

what kind of filter do i need to have on a qt, i have a penguig hob that i used for a 25 that i have laying around. How should i set it up for saltwater??
Also i went to the LFS and they told me to get neon goby's because they will eat the paraisite off the fish. I have to run to work now so i will not be able to do more until tomorrow. Nick |

I use a hang-on-the-back filter with a sponge for my QT. I also have some small live rock and no sand substrate.

the filtration depends on what kind of medication you are going to use...if youre going to use copper then you dont want to use a filter at first b/c it will just nullify the results....but do this: setup a QT as quickly as possible! i took my time and didnt get one setup quick enough and my Regal Tang gave up the ghost due to ich...ive also read in several places that you dont want any other things in the tank (no substrate, plants, etc.)....a QT is supposed to be just that - quarantine - of course this point has been argued many times...but it makes sense though...i took a large single-color (dark) cup and placed it inside the QT for the fishes to hide/sleep in...HTH, good luck!

the reason I said plastic-it can be sterilized after using bleach, boiling water, or the like.
no LR: copper would just kill it, and if there was something really nasty, it could live in the rock for 6+ months with some worm type intestinal parasites

You should probably give him a freshwater bath before putting him in the QT tank.
This will kill the existing parasites and the copper will take care of their eggs. Make sure the PH of the freshwater is close to that of your tank and the QT tank.

Uncle Salty's right. Use distilled water if you can. Even marine biologists do this.

Okay so currently here is what i have going on. I have got a 10 gallon QT set up, all levels are good, 200GPH powerhead, bio wheel HOB with all filter media and bio wheel removed. I did a freesh water dip as per uncle salties recomnedation. Now where do i go from here, do i need to add anything to the HOB? How often should i change the water? Please help me out.

The biowheel could have been left in the filter. It will eventually grow bacteria which will help your levels a bit and when your QT is not in use you can put your wheel in the sump to keep the bac. alive. Also you might not even need your powerhead in a 10gal. 200gph seems like alot to me in that small of a tank.
Your on the right track with the dip. I don't even dip my fish, I just carefully hold them in hand over my bucket and pour distilled water over them. All you need to do now is wait and keep an eye on your levels. I am personally against chemicals. Your fish's immune system should get rid of the ick in about 1-2 weeks. You may have another outbreak when it is returned to your display if ick is in there. I did but I havent seen ick in about 14 months, if it is in there, it sure isn't doing very well. Be sure not to overfeed, especially in a 10gal. Your nitrites and nitrates might spike. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
