clams
are there any types of clams I could get w/ about 215 watts on my 55 gallon tank? What about anenome's?
Thank you for your help, I am starting out in the hobby, and will likely upgrade my tank in a year or so, so don't want to go expensive on the lights and then replace the set up relatively soon. |

Wait till you get more light. I think that would be pushing it.

I use a nova extreme T5 2 daylight 2 actinic fixture. People were saying it won't work, get MH and some people said it would be ok. I have it about half way up in the tank and he does fine.
This is mine 36" http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113175 I thought it was 4x69 watts. It's 4x39 watts, so you have about 100 more watts than me from what that looks like and I keep a clam and SPS along with softies.

2X40 watts is WOW 16 watts per gallon and you would thing that is good, but a 40watt (or 2 40watts) is just too dim for a clam. PS--5.5gal is too small for clams, too hard to maintain good water quality (stability). |

watts per gallon is an outdated method of measuring aquarium light. It's all about the intensity and the depth it will reach. I personally wouldn't chance a clam or anemone without the proper metal halide lighting. Also, both need a very stable and established tank to thrive. i.e. a tank that is one year old or older with pristine water conditions.

I have a 29 gallon that I keep a T. derasa (clam) and two condi's (anemones) in. All I have is a 130 watt PC 50/50, and they are not only surviving, they are growing. The 215 watts should be fine as long as you keep the clam in the top 10 inches of water. The anemones should be fine, even at the bottom, as photosynthetic 'diet' may be supplimented with meaty foods. As dcombs said, you need perfect and STABLE water parameters...ie; <5ppm nitrates, 0phosphates, >350ppm calcium, etc, etc...

Disagree with the second part "I personally wouldn't chance a clam or anemone without the proper metal halide lighting" Clams and most anemone will do fine with T5 HO with proper reflectors and placement in the tank.

i also hate this miss-conception, i have successfully had a clam under t5 lighting around 200 wats for over 6 months its definantly thriving in its enviroment. its even on a sand bed.
