I run my 1250 internal. Super super quiet, no worries about leaking, and I think it's a bit better for cooling the pump.

eheims don't heat up much at all. Mine still feels cool to the touch.

I have two 1260's one internal one external...no problems as long as you use a BUNCH of teflon on the external

I'm assuming that the "BUNCH of teflon" is needed because you're using imperial fittings in a metric pump. The teflon is needed to help seal the differences between the threads.

it feels cool because it is being cooled by the water flowing through it. even though you are running it external, it still has the disadvantages of a submersible pump.

Goodwood
if you know you are going to run external, get an external. i'd only run an eheim external if i already had it laying around.

-transmits more heat to the water

-impeller/shaft tends to build up more calcium deposits which leads to wear/binding

-impeller/shaft are *far* less durable

-fittings aren't typically as solid

-impeller housing cover more likely to leak (simple twist-lock vs nuts+bolts)

-poorer ratings against head pressure

-tend to make a louder resonating hum that goes through walls, while with externals most of the noise is from a fan which is easier to muffle

-flimsy plastic base if anything for screwing down

how does it transmit more heat if its running external? Internal would transmit more heat than anything. Anyways, we're talking about an eheim here, not a mag. The fittings are solid to where it doesn't leak. If anything, you can also order metric fittings for the eheim pump if your paranoid. I don't notice any performance difference running it internally or externally and I've ran both with my pump. I prefer external because it takes up less room and don't notice any resonating hum.

I run an eheim 1250 and 1262 both externally and haven't had a problem with heat or leakage yet. Its only been about 2 months though. It did require a lot of teflon tape to fit the 1262 (if I remember corrctly), but still no problems.
