ID this worm thingy please

I noticed this thing in a hole in the live rock, there is calcified tube with tenticles coming out. The tube is about 1/8" long and the tenticles are about 1 1/4-1 1/2" long. The tenticles reach around grabbing anything that touches them, they are very very thin. I've drawn a picture (excuse the crudeness)

It looks like a vermetid snail. They are very common and not harmful, just incidental filter feeders.

According to Anthony Calfo, nothing reef safe eats them.

awsome, thanks alot y'all. I'm loving this SW thing, so many little bugs 'n stuff in my tank, really fasinating (I'm such a noob).

Only bad thing is it only took me a week to be cursed with my first mantis...sigh

Ephraim, I sit in front of my tank with a magnifying glass and at night a red filter over a flashlight to see the night critters. You are not alone. Sorry about the mantis. I haven't had one of those (knock wood) I have been plagued by xanthid crabs though. Little meanies.

vermitids dont have "tentacles" . the way they eat is by sending out "slime" feeders that grab particles in the water column. are you sure its vermitids and not a chaetopterid worm?

dippin61, you right. The tenticles move of thier own control, i saw one grab a pellet last night and drag it back to the hole...creepy.

Seems like every hole in my rocks has SOMETHING living in it.

Any tips on the best DIY mantis trap?

Find the rock he is living in. Put about six layers of latex gloves and/or chainmail gauntlets pull the rock out and soak in FW until he crawls out. Or better yet throw the rock in a bonfire. What am I saying I love my mantis he or she is about 4 inches lives with a Royal Gramma and a Maroon clown...whom the mantis is scared to death by! LOL
