AquaC Remora O-ring?
My AquaC Remora needs an O-ring, looks like something cheap and simple I could buy from a hardware store. Anyone know the exact specs of it?? Thanks in advance!

If you can't find an O-Ring, get 3 of the larger thicker rubber bands and use those. You may have to replace them more often, but they work great for me and usually come on veggies from the grocery store so you don't have to buy them.

lol... well - you asked for exact specs! (I measured and sourced them a year or so ago when mine finally snapped.)
I read your other thread about the Remora. When you get the thing running, something you might want to do is do the "silencer" mod to it. All it involves is cutting a thin piece of plastic - the plastic lid of a CoolWhip or yogurt container is perfect - roughly the size of the opening on the left side of the skimmer, under the collection cup... the "box" that the injector nozzle is in. Take some airline tubing and cut it to length to go around the four sides of the plastic piece you've cut out. Slit the airline tubing and slide it onto the perimeter of the rectangular plastic piece. If you want to get fancy, you can hot glue it. Now stuff that plastic piece into the left side of the skimmer, above the injector tube. The airline tubing will act as a "spring" and keep the plastic piece in place against the sides of the skimmer. You don't want a 100% air-tight seal - leave a gap in the corners for air flow. This will dramatically quiet down the noise from the skimmer and not effect the operation at all. (And this is where someone will chime in and say "Yeah... it won't effect the skimming operation at all because they don't skim in the first place! Nevermind the haters!) |

No clue. I have the Pro and run the Mag3. I suppose you could run a Mag3 on the regular Remora, but like others have said, it takes a chunk of real estate out of your tank.

I had some Red Devil vacuum cleaner belts that fit perfect and lasted a very long time on my Remora.

I have been using rubber bands for the last decade on my Remora. Double them up otherwise the cup will slide down when it starts to fill.

Do you have any pics of this? Never heard of it before and am interested in trying it.

The Remora was a big deal in its time. There weren't many other options that were any good at all. Deltec had one, but it was very expensive. Not many makers were producing units for small tanks. The Remora was rectangular in shape and that let it fit into tight spaces between tanks and walls. Designs and materials have improved since then. There are a lot of options. My Remora never produced anything but a very weak, wet odorless skimmate. Dissatisfied with it I picked up an Eshopps Psk-75 and it blew the doors off the Remora within 24 hours. My remora has been sitting on a shelf every since then. I don't even know if the Remoras are still for sell. AquaC makes some really nice bigger skimmers but I think the Remoras are past their time. If your thinking of buying one look around for a used unit. I see them all the time used for about $100. I would never buy a new one these days. There are too many other, better options (Aquamaxx, Eshopps, Reef Octopus, etc). If your dead set on getting one and can't find a used one locally I'd sell you mine. The AquaC guys were very helpful the one time I talked to them. I was having a tough time removing the plastic screw you use to clean the unit. They informed me that they had a new type of plastic screw and sent me a couple no-charge. I thought that was good customer service. |

I think IowaReefer meant "...and am interested in trying it" meaning that he already has a Remora and is interested in trying the DIY silencer I was talking about.
Yes, the Remoras are still for sale. In fact, the new ones come with a pre-cut foam insert that basically does the same thing as this DIY silencer! |

Their design is old school but still works. Not all of us think that skimming a large volume is good. |

You got it! I guess my injector sticks up a little too high to make the DIY flap flush with the chamber which is where my confusion was. I jerry-rigged it to work as best I could and it definitely is quieter, thanks for the tip!
And as for Remoras being junk; I bought mine over 10 years ago when I got into the hobby and it has done a good enough job for me. I will upgrade when it dies, but why spend the money? Moderate bioload/ feeding has always been more effective than ramping up the skimmer at keeping corals and fish happy. Just my 2 cents. Quote:
